Shoe Care 101: Keeping Fine Leather and Suede Beautiful

Every pair we carry at Socrati is chosen by hand for the quality of its materials: full-grain leather, hand-burnished edges, and in Jorge Bischoff's case, some genuinely striking exotic-effect leathers. None of that holds up without a bit of upkeep. Here's the short version of how to actually care for it.

Smooth leather

Wipe down after each wear with a soft, dry cloth to lift dust and surface dirt before it works into the grain. Condition every four to six weeks with a proper leather cream, not a silicone-based supermarket polish, which can dry the leather out over time. Let shoes rest for at least 24 hours between wears; the leather needs time to release moisture and reshape.

Suede

Suede pieces like the Tavira need a dedicated suede brush, used in short strokes to lift the nap back up after wear. Never use water or leather conditioner on suede. If it gets wet, stuff it with paper to hold its shape and let it air dry away from direct heat, then brush once fully dry.

Exotic and embossed leathers

Jorge Bischoff's snake-embossed and croc-effect pieces are still leather underneath the finish, but the texture holds dust more readily. A soft brush followed by a leather cream formulated for embossed finishes keeps the pattern crisp instead of flattening it over time.

Storage

Shoe trees aren't optional if you want a pair to last. Cedar ones help pull moisture out between wears and hold the shape of the toe box. Store away from direct sunlight, which fades leather unevenly, and rotate pairs rather than wearing the same ones two days running.

The one habit that matters most

Rotation. A pair that gets 24 to 48 hours to dry out and recover its shape between wears will consistently outlast one worn every single day, regardless of how well it's conditioned. If you only take one thing from this list, take that.

Refined. Enduring, with a little help. Exclusively at Socrati.
